Medicaid Behavioral Health Services Redesign

In December, 2022, Governor Youngkin announced a six-pillar plan to transform Virginia’s behavioral health system: the Right Help, Right Now. Plan. (RHRN).  As plans developed, initiatives to redesign Medicaid legacy community mental health rehabilitative services (CMHRS) emerged as significant needs within the system.  CMHRS services include:

Intensive In-Home
Therapeutic Day Treatment
Mental Health Skill Building
Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Mental Health Case Management for both adults and youth

The current 2024-2026 biennium budget includes Item 288, XX which provides the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) the authority to replace our CMHRS services and case management service.

In collaboration with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Department of Health Professions, DMAS launched a two-year project (July 2024-June 2026) to replace our CMHRS services and case management service.
